Applied research

Research

Doctoral research and applied R&D on physical assets: how a structure is observed, how its condition is reasoned about under uncertainty, and how that knowledge reaches an engineering decision.

Doctoral research

PhD Candidate in Civil Engineering

In progress

University of Granada · 2023 – Present

Line of research

Research: ontology-driven cognitive systems, digital twins, Bayesian system identification and information fusion for structural asset management.

  • Semantic Technologies
  • Digital Twins
  • Bayesian System Identification
  • Information Fusion

The doctorate is in progress. It is not presented as completed and no dissertation title is published: the knowledge base records the line of research, not a deposited thesis.

Structural engineering foundation

MSc in Structural Engineering

University of Granada · 2021 – 2023

Thesis: physics-informed AI for structural damage detection and classification, grade 10/10.

The doctoral work continues an engineering trajectory: naval architecture and structural calculation first, a master's in structures next, and from there to structural monitoring and Bayesian inference.

From structure to decision

The recorded research areas are not a list of unrelated topics: they describe stages of one chain, from the physical asset to the engineering decision. Every concept comes from the verified public graph.

  1. Physical system

The built asset: vessels, buildings and heritage structures.

    • Naval Architecture
    • Structural Engineering
    • Cultural Heritage Conservation
  2. Observation

Instrumenting and measuring how the structure actually behaves.

    • Structural Health Monitoring
  3. Inference under uncertainty

Bayesian and physics-informed methods that estimate condition from incomplete data.

    • Bayesian System Identification
    • Physics-Informed Machine Learning
    • Artificial Intelligence
    • Explainable AI
    • Trustworthy AI
  4. Engineering knowledge

Ontologies and knowledge graphs that integrate heterogeneous information and make it queryable.

    • Semantic Technologies
    • Information Fusion
  5. Decision support

Digital twins and reliability models that support operation and maintenance decisions.

    • Digital Twins
    • Reliability Engineering
    • Predictive Maintenance

Doctoral lines, and where they are applied

Each doctoral line, with the verified industrial projects that record the same research area. These are applications of the line, not the doctoral research itself. A project appears only where the knowledge base relates it to that area explicitly; nothing is inferred from topical resemblance.

Methods

Methods recorded on verified research projects. The complete technical vocabulary is published in the knowledge graph.

  • Ontologies

Applied evidence

Projects that share a research area with the doctorate or the master's, or that produced a verified publication. Each card describes the project; Emilio's own contribution to it is on the Projects page.

The knowledge graph as an engineering artefact

This portfolio publishes its own knowledge graph in RDF, with an OWL ontology, SHACL shapes and competency questions. It is a demonstration of semantic engineering, not the subject of the doctoral thesis.
